¿Dónde está GEA?
This was the mural that started it all. An urban intervention for the transmedia project «¿Dónde está GEA?», a Service-Learning (ApS) initiative for the Alanna Association.

This mural is the result of a collaboration between the UPV and the Alanna Association, created as part of the transmedia project «¿Dónde está GEA?» in partnership with Spanish filmmaker and playwright Samuel Sebastian. The term «transmedia» refers to projects that unfold through various narratives and communication platforms. The central component of this project is a website designed to resemble a tram line map, where users can choose any «stop.» Each station represents a situation experienced by women who have suffered abuse, depicting their journey from reporting the abuse to seeking protection for their children. By clicking on a stop, users can access video clips, animations, and interviews that address the specific scenario represented.
Through the use of figurative elements, the mural makes it easier for viewers to understand and visualize the intended message, fostering empathy for the issue being communicated. While the intervention conveys a clear purpose, its placement in a public space invites diverse interpretations, one of the most compelling aspects of mural art. The central figure—a woman partially concealing her face while observing through the tram window—was a deliberate choice, representing GEA. She could be any woman, with any physical characteristics, which enhances the audience’s ability to empathize.
The primary social function of this mural is to raise awareness and encourage reflection on the issue of gender-based violence. It also serves as a resource for seeking help in dangerous situations, incorporating helpline numbers for immediate assistance. In addition to this social purpose, the mural’s illustrative and narrative elements stand out, as they provide both educational value and a call to action within its composition.
