Emilia Matallana
Mural created at the Institute No. 5 of Puerto de Sagunto in tribute to Valencian biochemist Emilia Matallana, as part of the 2024 edition of the Dones de Ciència project, promoted by the Polytechnic University of Valencia and Las Naves.

Dones de Ciència aims to raise visibility and pay tribute to women who are leading figures in their respective fields, while also highlighting the consequences of gender inequality. This includes the challenges faced in the development of scientific and research careers, as well as the barriers women encounter throughout their professional journeys in these areas.
Emilia Matallana is one of Spain’s most prominent researchers in the field of biochemistry. A cathedratic at the University of Valencia, she was born in Sagunto in October 1961. Thanks to the Dones de Ciència project, she is now more recognized in her hometown. This mural, created as a tribute to her scientific career by the Polytechnic University of Valencia and the City of Valencia through Valencia Innovation Capital, honors her outstanding contributions to science.
In the composition, the central portrait of Emilia Matallana stands out, set against a background of wine yeast cells—her area of research—and various laboratory tools such as PCR tubes, flasks, and a tube shaker labeled with the word yeast.
The entire design is rendered in a color palette dominated by wine tones, which adds significant symbolic meaning to the piece.
